Return Home

Goal:   To keep Older Adults living independently as possible for as long as possible.

Myth:   If you get sick and can’t care for yourself, the next step after you leave the hospital is “ the Nursing Home.”

Fact: There are many different ways to help care for an older adult besides sending them to a nursing home.  If you are a caregiver or know someone who is, the following below are types of businesses that can help a person stay at home and maintain their independence.

Home Health Care:

Assistance furnished in the home by an outside agency that provides home health (e.g., bathing), nurses’ services (e.g., change dressings, injections), and therapists (occupational, speech, and /or physical).

Home Health Agency:

A public or private agency certified by Medicare that specializes in providing skilled nurses, homemakers, home health aides and therapeutic services, such as physical therapy in an individual’s home.

Homemaker Services:

In home help with meal preparation, cleaning, grocery shopping, errands, and laundry.

Tip: There are various levels of care depending on what individuals can do for themselves. In-home services are offered by various individuals, programs and providers, and can also be offered by friends and family.

If you’re considering hiring someone to come into your home or the home of a loved one or friend, explore your options.  Word of mouth is a good way to find out about how a company has treated others.  Also consider consulting a physician for referrals for in-home services.
